To teach or not to teach?
If you recall my earlier post (but probably not if you've accidentally landed on this page from Google while looking up a recipe for Penang Curry or something), I mentioned that I'd applied for an English teaching position at a Thai language school. I'd sent off scanned copies of my degrees and passport, and was waiting to hear back from them.
But I'd subsequently decided that I didn't really want to take a teaching position after all, because then we'd be limited in our ability to roam around Thailand and the neighbouring countries like Cambodia and Vietnam.
Anyway, the Principal of the Akson Bundit Language Center just got back to me saying that he needs a few more documents, namely a criminal background check (which apparently you can request from your local police station?) and a 'biodata' form where I have to fill out details of my parents' background (relevant how?) and employment history.
Now, should I be suss about the fact that the Principal's email address is a Hotmail account? And that the school's website is hosted on a .Mac account? It's a good-looking website, so I don't think it was put together by a band of thugs looking to harvest my kidneys or anything, but sheesh, web hosting with your own domain name is literally cheap as chips these days.
I don't know. I think it would be good to have a full-time job and the support of a local company there for when we first move to Thailand plus they help with arranging accommodation, work permit and visa, and offer health insurance and four weeks of holiday + 20 national holidays. Really doesn't sound like a bad gig, so provided they don't require me to sign a year-long-contract or anything, I could maybe do it for a few months while we get settled (while doing some freelance work on the side) and then switch to full-time freelancing. I'll get my criminal background check and biodata form sorted anyway, 'just in case' I decide to go through with it. You never know.
